This 10-day Uganda and Rwanda Primate Safari is designed for travellers who want to experience some of East Africa’s most remarkable primates while also enjoying beautiful landscapes, forest ecosystems and local culture.
The safari combines chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest, gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the scenic beauty of Lake Bunyonyi, and a visit to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda for golden monkey trekking. The journey concludes in Kigali with a city and cultural experience.

Itinerary
Day 1: Kampala or Entebbe – Kibale Forest National Park
Begin your safari early in the morning from Kampala or Entebbe with your Afriquest Travels professional driver-guide.
Travel westwards through Uganda’s scenic countryside, passing through rural communities, plantations and rolling landscapes.
Enjoy lunch en route before continuing to Kibale Forest National Park.
Arrive at your lodge in the afternoon, check in and relax.
Your guide will brief you about the following day’s chimpanzee trekking experience, including trekking requirements and what to carry.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking – Kibale Forest National Park
After an early breakfast, proceed to the chimpanzee trekking headquarters for registration and briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers.
Begin your trek through the lush Kibale rainforest in search of a habituated chimpanzee community.
During the trek, you may also encounter other primates, including black-and-white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys and blue monkeys.
Once the chimpanzees are located, spend the designated viewing time observing their behaviour and taking photographs.
Return to your lodge after the trek for lunch and relaxation.
Embark on an Afternoon Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary and community experience.
Overnight: Kibale Forest Lodge

Day 3: Kibale Forest – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
After breakfast, check out and begin your journey towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Travel through the scenic countryside of western and southwestern Uganda, passing through local communities, plantations and spectacular highland landscapes.
Enjoy lunch en route before continuing to Bwindi.
Arrive at your lodge in the afternoon/evening and check in.
Your guide will provide a detailed briefing about the following day’s gorilla trekking experience.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
After an early breakfast, proceed to the appropriate gorilla trekking headquarters for registration and briefing.
Begin your trek into the ancient Bwindi forest in search of a habituated mountain gorilla family.
The trek may take several hours depending on the location of the gorillas and the terrain.
Once the gorillas are located, spend the designated viewing time observing their behaviour, taking photographs and enjoying this extraordinary wildlife encounter.
After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation and Batwa cultural or community experience, depending on time and energy.
Overnight: Bweza Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 5: Bwindi – Lake Bunyonyi
Enjoy breakfast before departing Bwindi for Lake Bunyonyi.
Drive through the spectacular terraced hills and highland scenery of southwestern Uganda.
Arrive at Lake Bunyonyi around midday and check into your accommodation.
After lunch, enjoy a boat excursion on Lake Bunyonyi, exploring some of its numerous islands while learning about the local communities and history.
Spend the afternoon relaxing beside the lake and enjoying the scenery.
Overnight: Bunyonyi Overland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 6: Lake Bunyonyi – Rwanda and Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, depart Lake Bunyonyi and cross into Rwanda.
Continue towards Volcanoes National Park, enjoying the spectacular scenery of Rwanda’s rolling hills and rural countryside.
Arrive in the Musanze area and check into your lodge.
After lunch, relax at the lodge or enjoy an optional community experience.
Your guide will brief you about the following day’s golden monkey trekking experience.
Overnight: Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Day 7: Golden Monkey Trekking – Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, proceed to the park headquarters for registration and briefing.
Begin your trek through the bamboo and montane forest in search of the endangered golden monkeys.
Spend time observing these active primates in their natural habitat and photographing them.
Return to the lodge after the trek for lunch and relaxation.
Afternoon: Iby’Iwacu cultural experience and local community visit.
Overnight: Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge

Day 8: Volcanoes National Park – Lake Kivu
After breakfast, depart for Lake Kivu, one of Rwanda’s most scenic destinations.
Enjoy the drive through Rwanda’s beautiful rolling hills and countryside.
Arrive at Lake Kivu around midday and check into your accommodation.
After lunch, spend the afternoon relaxing along the Lake Kivu boat excursion or lakeside community experience.

Day 9: Lake Kivu – Kigali
Enjoy breakfast overlooking Lake Kivu before beginning your journey towards Kigali.
Travel through Rwanda’s picturesque countryside, with opportunities for scenic photography and local community interaction.
Arrive in Kigali in the afternoon and check into your hotel.
Depending on arrival time, enjoy a short city experience or relax at the hotel.

Day 10: Kigali City Tour – Departure
After breakfast, enjoy a guided Kigali city and cultural tour.

Enjoy lunch in Kigali before your transfer to Kigali International Airport for your onward flight.
