Early breakfast at the lodge and Transfer to park headquarters for briefing

The day begins very early in the Volcanoes region, with a calm and cool mountain atmosphere around the lodges near Volcanoes National Park. This is the most important morning of your gorilla trekking experience.

After breakfast, you depart by vehicle for the park headquarters at Kinigi Park Headquarters, located about 20–30 minutes from most lodges in the Musanze area.

The drive is short but scenic, passing rural homesteads, farmland, and misty hills as you approach the base of the volcanoes. The air becomes noticeably cooler and fresher as you get closer to the park.

Begin gorilla trekking experience in the rainforest

Your gorilla trekking adventure officially begins as you enter the dense rainforest of the Volcanoes National Park, one of the last remaining habitats of the endangered mountain gorilla.

After the briefing at Kinigi Park Headquarters, you are driven to the starting point of your assigned trail. Here, you meet your ranger guides, armed trackers, and porters before stepping into the forest.

The trek begins through cultivated farmland at the forest edge, gradually transitioning into thick bamboo zones and dense rainforest vegetation.

The atmosphere becomes cooler, misty, and quieter as you move deeper into the park.

Spend one hour observing mountain gorillas

After trekking through the rainforest with your ranger guides and trackers, you quietly approach the gorilla family. The guides will signal you to slow down, leave bags with porters if needed, and maintain silence as you get into position.

The group settles in a safe viewing distance, usually within 7–10 meters, though gorillas may occasionally move closer on their own.

You are allowed exactly one hour with the gorilla family. During this time, the forest becomes still except for natural sounds bird calls, rustling leaves, and the low grunts of gorillas communicating.

Photography and wildlife viewing opportunities

The rainforest of the Volcanoes National Park offers some of the most rewarding photography and wildlife viewing experiences in Africa, especially during gorilla trekking and forest hikes.

Return from trekking and receive trekking certificates

After your unforgettable hour with the mountain gorillas in the rainforest of the Volcanoes National Park, you begin the return journey back through the forest to the park exit.

At or near the park headquarters at Kinigi Park Headquarters, each visitor is presented with a Gorilla Trekking Certificate as a souvenir of the experience.

This certificate officially confirms your participation in gorilla trekking within Volcanoes National Park and serves as a meaningful keepsake.

Lunch and relaxation at the lodge

After returning from the gorilla trekking experience in the Volcanoes National Park, guests head back to their lodge near Musanze for a well-deserved lunch and rest.

Enjoy a relaxing evening meal at your lodge featuring a mix of Rwandan and international dishes such as grilled meats, vegetables, rice, and fresh fruits. A calm, cozy atmosphere helps you unwind after the day’s activities.

Overnight Stay

Stay overnight at your lodge in the Virunga foothills near Musanze. Comfortable rooms, cool mountain air, and peaceful surroundings provide rest and preparation for the next day’s journey.
