Uganda Wildlife Authority confirms that gorilla trekking takes place in both parks. Bwindi is divided into four main trekking sectors—Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo—while Mgahinga offers a much smaller park experience with one habituated transboundary gorilla group.
Uganda Wildlife Authority – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi is Uganda’s best-known gorilla trekking destination and is home to almost half of the world’s mountain gorilla population.
The park covers approximately 321 square kilometres and is a remarkable biodiversity hotspot. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its exceptional biological diversity and importance to mountain gorilla conservation.
One of Bwindi’s biggest advantages is its four trekking sectors:

One of Mgahinga’s biggest advantages is the opportunity to combine gorilla trekking with golden monkey tracking.
Golden monkeys are an endangered primate species associated with the Albertine Rift and Virunga landscape.
This means you can potentially experience two remarkable primate encounters during the same visit.
Mgahinga is also a fantastic choice for adventurous travellers.
The park offers opportunities to hike its volcanic peaks, including Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhabura and Mount Sabyinyo.

This is where things become more subjective.
There isn’t one park that is objectively better for everyone.
The gorilla trekking experience in both parks involves hiking through natural forest to find a habituated gorilla family. UWA advises that gorilla treks can take approximately 2–7 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas and other conditions, with visitors generally spending up to one hour observing the habituated family.
The important thing to understand is that gorillas are wild animals.
Their location changes from day to day, so no reputable operator can guarantee that you will have an easy trek or predict exactly how long it will take.

Bwindi’s steep ridges and valleys can make trekking physically demanding, while Mgahinga’s high-altitude volcanic terrain can also be challenging.
So rather than choosing a park simply because someone says it is “easier,” it is better to choose based on your overall travel preferences and itinerary.
For the standard gorilla trekking permit, there is no difference between Bwindi and Mgahinga for foreign non-residents under Uganda Wildlife Authority’s current 2024–2026 conservation tariff.
The current tariff lists a gorilla tracking permit at US$800 for foreign non-residents, US$700 for foreign residents, US$500 for the rest of Africa, and UGX 300,000 for East African Community citizens.
The permit covers the gorilla tracking activity and associated conservation-related services specified by UWA. Accommodation, transportation, meals, porter services and other parts of your safari package are separate costs.
Therefore, price alone shouldn’t determine whether you choose Bwindi or Mgahinga.
Instead, consider what you want to experience around the trek.
For a first-time gorilla trekker, Bwindi is often the more flexible choice.
Its four trekking sectors provide more options for building an itinerary, and the park can easily be incorporated into broader Uganda safari routes.
However, that doesn’t mean Mgahinga is less rewarding.
If you are particularly interested in volcanoes, golden monkeys, mountain landscapes and a smaller park setting, Mgahinga could actually be the better choice.
If your priority is forest biodiversity, Bwindi has the edge.
If your priority is combining gorillas with other mountain and primate experiences, Mgahinga is extremely compelling.
